Heritage: My mother is Nigerian and my father is of Spanish, Welsh and Middle-eastern descent. I do not identify as mixed race as I believe race to be a social construct. Instead, I opt for what I find to be a more fitting self-description of multiple ancestry.
Local Green Party: Lewisham Green Party
Nominators: Sabrina Poole and Sahaya James
(both from Stroud District Green Party)
Why I would like to join the Greens of Colour Committee could easily be written in more than 300 words, as it is hard to put a word count on the passion and determination I possess in regards to working towards ending discrimination. I have been a member of the Green Party since late 2013, since which time I have had the opportunity to work within the party and to canvass on its behalf, both valued experiences. My awareness on numerous discrimination issues, both globally and nationally was heightened also in 2013. Since this time it has been difficult to look back with my own goals of becoming a scholar and an activist the product of this paradigm shift. Among the Green party’s calls for a fairer society and sustainable development I began to realize that the voices of BAME people, like my own, were somewhat lost admist the shouts for change. Fervent about deconstructing the racist and patriarchal power structures that define our system, working to silence and marginalize minorities, I began to feel conflicted, the Green Party needed to have greater representation of these groups so as to set the standard for the progressive society all its members collectively work towards. The committee is the first essential step towards the manifestation of this desire, and so to be a part in such a group would be my ideal. I am a hardworking and creative individual. I believe this places me well to be able to add to the group’s progress as I will endeavor to find new ways to engage young and old alike, both within and external to the party. And, so a vote for me a new voice, one that will add to debates to make for a richer and more representative party and one that will work towards the same goal within the wider society.
