Heritage: Black-mixed-race (On the census form I would come under 'Mixed White and Black African')
Local Green Party: Headingley Green Party
Nominators: Deborah Fenney Salkeld and Ben Vincent (both from Headingley Green Party)
I'd like to join the committee because I truly believe that the Green party offer the best option for an increasingly (racially) diverse electorate. I have strong beliefs in equality and social justice and believe such a state can only be reached through radical leftist politics. I believe that the Green party can help us move in this direction but, if this is to happen, there must be a concerted focus on the experiences of marginalised groups. A critical awareness of the way race, ethnicity and nationality operates in society (without the unhelpful conflation of race and class) is sorely missing from mainstream politics. I hope to be part of the movement towards centring race in Green party work. I really that, as a committee member, I can be involved in creating and facilitating open and progressive dialogue among communities of colour.
