Local Green Party: Camden Green Party
Nominators: Manishta Kisoon (Oxford Green Party) and Elaha Walizadeh (Lewisham Green Party)
I would like to join the committee because the liberation of people of colour is something I'm very passionate about, and I feel that our voices should be a lot stronger in the party. When I joined I was dismayed at the white washing on green discussion groups, which is why I set up the young greens of colour group so that people had a safe space. I think that many new members are confused by the contrast between the image projected by representatives like Caroline Lucas and the reality of members on the discussion groups. As the founder of the Kashmiri students campaign I have effectively reached out to and engaged with the diaspora community across the UK via social media. I effectively recruited like-minded individuals across the country to build an initial committee; each now run societies in regional zones. I have spoken to the All Party Parliamentary group for international relations in the House of Commons, and established credibility with trade unionists, academics, activists and politicians. As a parliamentary candidate in Luton north I was the first person representing the Green Party on a lot of media for People of colour. This is definitely something that the party needs to improve on and something I would push for. I would like to contribute by using my knowledge of the community and my experience as a parliamentary candidate for the Green Party on the committee.
